ܝܠܚܬܐ / Yalekhta – (Suret / Assyrian)
A cloth or scarf worn over the head, traditionally by women. It can serve as an everyday scarf for warmth, style, or modesty, but in ceremonial or religious contexts, it functions as a sacred head-covering, symbolizing devotion, tradition, and cultural identity. In some contexts, men may also wear a similar cloth.
The first painting in my collection, depicting Assyrian women carrying their family members’ babies for baptism, with myself as a baby at the center.
45 x 71 cm / 18" x 29"
~ 2002/2003, Baghdad, Iraq.
